Pet presented with history of sudden Paresis from hind limbs in November. On CT scan it was diagnosed with IVDD (L1 – L2 ) spinal cord compression.
What is IVDD - Intervertebral Disc Disease is a gradual, age-related, degenerative process that affects the spinal cord of the dog over a period of time.
IVDD occurs when the shock absorbing discs between your dog's vertebrae gradually begin to harden until they are no longer able to cushion the vertebrae normally. The hardened discs often go on to bulge and compress the spinal cord, in many cases damaging the dog's nerve impulses such as those that control bladder and bowel control.
In other cases, a simple jump or poor landing can lead to one or more of the hardened discs bursting and pressing into the nerves of the dog's spinal cord causing pain, nerve damage or even paralysis.
Treatment – Bella was unable to bear weight on hind limbs. We started bella with VHBOT (HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY ). After 11 sessions of therapy and concurrent medical treatment now bella is able to walk and maintain weight on her hind limbs.
What is VHBOT - Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. Body's tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function. When tissue is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. With repeated scheduled treatments, the temporary extra high oxygen levels encourage normal tissue oxygen levels, even after the therapy is completed.
